PowerHouse is an award-winning educational program designed to help consumers improve the energy efficiency, safety and comfort of their homes. The project was uber complex because the show's segments didn't run by specific categories, such as energy efficient lighting. Several topics might be covered in one segment, yet that was how the former site was organized, so users couldn't search the site easily by topic. The site needed to be completely re-architected, redesigned and re-strategized to meet the needs of the show's producers and the very different needs of the website's users.
The Hellman Web team completely reconstructed the site through the eyes of the user. We created new main categories that reflected the three things users came to the site for: to watch the shows, to get energy-efficient living tips, and to get show info. We also designed those three areas to all work together, so users could find tips related to shows and vice versa.
Hellman designed the front-end design and programming of the new site, and PowerHouse's internal development team implemented the back-end. The site looks and functions exactly as first envisioned, including the addition of social media -- Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Show producers, loyal fans and frequent show visitors are all pleased with the end result.
